In a song, what do you find fun/not fun? (guitar and drums)

Postby kirbix » Mon Jan 26, 2009 9:44 am

As a test of my music making abilities, I'm thinking of making a song that's fun. I'll be looking at the reviews at www.rbdlc.com and here for opinions on what's fun and what's not. Yeah.

I don't think I want to make an endless streak of HOPOs, though. I want to make an actual song, not something that's made just for FoF. It'd be nice if you could give me examples of songs which are fun.

the funnest song i have played is Rock This Town (the one from GH2). other fun songs include Sweet Child O' Mine (GH2), Dani California (RB), Flirtin' With Disaster (RB), Slash Guitar Battle (GH3), and Carry on Wayward Son (GH2 and RB2). Paradise City is a fun song, but i havent found a decent fretting of it (Puppetz version is a little overfretted).

Guitar: Lots and lots of ho/pos. Can be easy ho/pos, can be hard ho/pos. Doesn't matter. Ho/pos are always fun. Also, have some challenging chord progressions. It can be like the Art of Shredding or changing from one chord design to another. For instance, green-yellow to red-orange or something.

Drums: A song with lots of improvisations. It gets boring doing the same beat over and over. Songs like American Woman are really fun because it's a different beat every time. However, it can be a pain to fret.

Spoiler:

It's not a real goose, it's only a picture of one.

Repetition = Not Fun
Unexpected variations = Fun (As long as it fits the song)

Most played songs for me that I like:

"That Smell" by Puppetz
"Prozak Milkshake" Personal fretting.
"Peacemaker" BSR

I like just catchy songs as long as their fretted right with enough variaty. I'm not a huge fan of continual shredding, but that's just one person.

I think it's really hard to make a fun song... for example, I usually hate playing random chords, but 'Mutha' by Extreme, which has a lot of chors, I thought was really fun.

I find the chord part in Aces High (comes first after two sections) extremely fun.

Varied chords in general are fun IMO, as long as they're not to close.

I really like songs with a lot of varying HOs and POs. Also for drums syncopated beats are always fun. I believe Dani California (RB) has good examples of that.
