I did another guitar. This time we documented the process.

I made a tutorial showing everything.

I used a Gravis Gamepad USB this time.

What exactly does the gravis gamepad look like (or a model number)

I only ask because I have made 2 custom guitars (pics later) one out of a toy and my second one out of a real guitar. On my first, I used an old wingman rumblepad that I had lying around, and it was fairly straight forward. I wanted to go all out on the new one so I bought a new logitech double action gamepad, and wouldn't you know it, so S.O.B.'s coated the PC board with some kind of plastic, contacts and all, and none of my solder would stick. If I could pick up one of those gamepads for cheap, I would like to use one. A pic would be nice.

Thanks

If you're referring to mine, I used a medium sized toggle switch that I picked up at a local electronics exchange store for $1.50. It works great.

I actually use the whammy now.
The whammy on these toy guitars works pretty nicely.

Since frets doesnt use the whammy...and the whammy is analog...the guitar hero whammy function isnt needed.

Just a word of caution on those Gravis Gamepads. I used the same ones to make a 2-player MAME rig and found that they have issues with "blocking."

For the uninitiated, blocking refers to the symptom that if you mash multiple inputs at the same time, one of those inputs gets blocked.

I'm not at home, so I can't give the specifics, but IIRC, the blocking was only on the 4 buttons on the face of the gamepad - which is pretty ghetto when you think about it. Those are the ones you need the most :) Anyway, I believe, the trigger buttons and start/select didn't block.

In short, test that puppy before you start soldering or you'll wonder why in the hell you can't hit those 3 note chords ;)

I can't speak for Mac, but in Winders, just open the Game Controllers Control Panel and look at the tab that shows you all the inputs. Hold down a button and make sure that you can move the gamepad in all 8 directions while holding that button. When blocking is happening, you will see that it will skip some of those 8 positions as you move your thumb around the gamepad.

Hope that saves someone some aggravation in the future.

Cheers,
Munky
