How can I share my 14Gig FOF collection

Postby DamienT » Mon Mar 09, 2009 10:00 am

Hi fellow fretters,

The past view months I have been gathering numerous songs for Frets, searching and downloading individual files took me ages (due to max amount of daily downloads or a 45sec waiting barrier :glare: ) so I was wondering .....

Can I somehow put my 14 gig 1680 song file collection online?! I know and understand most of you have an aversion against Torrents so I'll respect the request not to make a torrent collection however, I would like to give others the oppertunity to get a nice number of songs at once without growing ZZ-top beard while waiting . ( i don't take credits for the songs cause I can't fret at all  )

None of the (free) file hosting sites I found allow me to put this amount online and like I said downloading the list one at a time takes a very, very, very long time.

Hope someone has a sollution,

Ciao Damien

here is an idea:

compile the song.ini and notes.mid for each song in a single file
upload that file to a hosting site
post the link to it

the person downloading the pack will have to find the ogg for the song they want to play on their own.

Just giving the links to the song pages still requires people to wait 45 sec or download a max of 2 songs per 15 minutes and this list allready exists on wikidot.

And trying to find the .ogg for 1680 songs seems like a huge task aswell.

The thing I'd like to do is just simply put the complete collection online or on a server so that every one can download the whole bunch. But I don't know anyone with a server and I don't want to pay for an account on mediafire or whatever isn't an option either (I'm just a not to rich student  )

Yeah the only way you can really do this would be either (1)some form of advanced .rar archive in parts where after "part1" is extracted, "part2" automatically begins to extract to the same place or (2)simply use a torrent.

If you got a powerful enough system there is kgb achiever. it ultra compresses files. You install it then zip your songs folder. then you take the zip file and compress it to a kgb. there is a bare minimum for this program you can't have lower than 256 megs of ram on your computer and you must have at least a P4 3 ghz processor
on the highest setting you can compress 5 gb to 500 mb. on my computer it took me 20 hours to decompress a 1 gb file but i got an old system. And to run at the highest setting you must a minimum have 1 gb of ram free. this free program is powerful

* @away_xbox straps 15 sticks of TNT to Amak11's body. The display reads [58] seconds.
<@away_xbox> Diffuse the timer by cutting the correct wire. There are 14 wires. They are Green White Peenus Indigo Black Gold Grey Brown Violet Turquoise Teal Magenta Mauve and Yellow.

<@away_xbox> ...snip....
<@away_xbox> Amak11 cut the Peenus wire. This has defused the timer on the TNT! Just try and get it off you without setting it off, ok?

Keep in mind, though, that as with anything that is already compressed, Ogg Vorbis files don't compress very well...

Plus, after looking at kgb achiever it seems that decompression takes hours and a fast PC too.

Lol make that days  dual core with 2Gig ram took 26 hours but the ogg did'nt compress like they should so the file is still way to large.

Torrent seems to be the only option sofar. Does anyone have an objection against torrents? (if you do feel free to give me an other option)

I have no objection against torrents however you may also want to consider breaking the huge folder up into several pieces (folders by first letter of artist) then upload those onto websites like megaupload or mediafire. You're ac/dc's may be separated from your zz tops but it is an reasonable alternative for people who are looking to no leave their pc on overnight to download.

Cant do this either, file A would be 614MB, file B more than 590MB and I can upload only 100mb on a free account

Not only will 14 GB take FOREVER to compress (That's one hell of a song collection lol), for the downloader, it will take even longer to download. I don't think file sharing sites are the way to go, as even if download a massive file 700mb-1GB+, and something gets corrupted or the download gets interrupted, you will have to start over. My vote would be torrents, which allow you to continue when you're ready.

One a random note, why does't FoF support .mp3?
