XP not finding xbox 360 X-plorer guitar driver

Postby gamermatt » Fri Nov 28, 2008 9:01 pm

Alright so i just bought an Xbox 360 X-plorer guitar at circuit city today for $9.99, and im trying to get this to work with frets on fire. I plug the guitar in to my laptop via usb, and xp recognizes that it is a "Guitar Hero X-Plorer." Then, when it tries to update the driver, it says that it cannot be found. I tried downloading the driver via microsoft's website, but i cant get that to work either. Anyone know why this is happening?

Here is a screenshot:

Thanks in advance.

If you downloaded the driver as an executable installer, run it and when it completes, remove and re-plug in the controller. Then try telling Device Manager to manually update the driver. When it asks whether to look online, say no and opt to install from a specific location. Then try to specify that you'll choose the driver yourself. If the next screen shows an item for the 360 controller driver, then just select it and hit Next. I run into stupid Windows driver recognition issues like this all the time.

Thanks for the response.

Im not sure if im downloading the right driver. While researching, i found this article on kotaku:
http://kotaku.com/gaming/guitar-hero/fr ... 249579.php

Which redirected me here to download the driver:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

So i downloaded that exe, and when i try to run it, it give me this error:

Odd... how would i go about fixing this? :S

Alright i actually tried that one earlier today while trying to fix my problem, and i assumed that this is considered to be a controller and an "xbox 360 controller for windows" even though it is a guitar. I downloaded the exe and got this message while running it:

then this:

i tried researching it myself and i couldnt get it to allow me to run and install the exe file....

now what? lol

From the link I gave you, I downloaded it for 32 bit XP and installed it on a computer to test it. It worked. So maybe your download was corrupted, I'd try downloading and running it again because I'm pretty sure Microsoft's controller driver passes their own quality testing... Make sure you have administrative rights on the computer you're using, otherwise driver installation will often fail.

I checked and i do have administrator rights on my computer. i tried downloading it again (xp 32 bit for xbox 360 controller), and running the exe again, and i got the same exact error...

Any idea what can be causing this?

What is even weirder is, i researched it some more and did the following:

# Open System in Control Panel.
# On the Hardware tab, click Driver Signing.
# Under File Signature Verification, click one of the following:

* Click Ignore to allow all device drivers to be installed on this computer, regardless of whether they have a digital signature.

so it should allow me to install any drivers, and it STILL does not work... this is quite frustrating

help would be appreciated, thanks again

I am running XP SP2.

I did install xbdc and follow those steps but windows never promoted me to install any driver. Step 5 never occurred:

"Windows should find the device and should prompt you to install the "XBCD XBox Gamepad""

And yes i unplugged my guitar and plugged it back in and i get nothing...

Microsoft's official answer might be to backup your files, but in practice, I haven't had to do that or reinstall any programs afterward. If you're worried about it, go ahead and back up your files/OS partition, it's not really my responsibility.
