My top five would be:
1) Cowboy Bebop - You just can't top noir, in space, with bounty hunters and a soundtrack by Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts
2) Neon Genesis Evangelion - It's the only mech show I can watch, and I liked how everyone in it was psychologically damaged in some way, and how the main character wasn't your typical balls-to-the-wall action hero
3) Death Note - As much as I hate shows with this much hype, it's fun to watch two geniuses playing a psychological cat and mouse game, trying to trap each other
4) Mushishi - It deals with a lot of old Japanese myths and folklore, which I thought was interesting. Just a very relaxing show to watch.
5) FLCL - Short, completely ridiculous, but very entertaining. I didn't like it much at first, but I love it more and more everytime I see it. Plus, the soundtrack is done by the pillows.
As for Akira, the story's obviously going to be better in the manga (as it's much, much longer) but the remastered DVD is simply beautiful. It's amazing what they did with that.
