How is this off topic?? Isn't making songs a huge part of FoF?

I dearched google and got a bunch of crap shareware btw. I was hoping that someone on here had a better option.

It's impossible to convert a normal mp3 file to a midi.

Yep. Because a .midi isn't a recorded song. It's a bunch of notes packed in a very small file, then played through WMP or another midi player, hence why we use notes.mid for FoF.

No, not entirely. There have been a few experimental programs made but the results were extremely poor at best.

MIDI files are like sheet music for the computer. They don't contain any sound information inside themselves like .wav or .mp3. Instead, they contain instructions that tell the computer how to play the music. All sound coming from MIDI's are computer generated.

Yeah. Computers have a Sound Bank with pre-recorded samples. You can even rip them if you have the right software (mod-plug tracker, for example). I don't know who'd want to rip those ear-bleeding samples though (although some of them are actually really nice, like the piano. I have yet to hear a piano better synthesized).

But yeah, there are a few programs that use wave analysis to determine what notes are playing and stuff, but I think for most of it you need a recording of a single instrument in order for it to convert. All the programs that I've seen are shareware, btw. So sorry, no dice.

Most (if not all) of the MIDI's of popular songs that you find are actually made by regular people like you and me.
