I made a similar post over at the Synthesia forum and the developer suggested checking out Keyboardmania, a japanese app and posted a link to a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRtRZ7uEuug

The developer Nicholas posted this:
When I first made Synthesia, I left it kind of open which direction it could go -- more accessible/arcade-gamey or more realistic/learning-tool.

As time has gone on, it feels like the crazy majority of the user feedback has been on providing a tool to help learn how to play the piano.

That said, you may be looking for Keyboardmania. There is a PC version with lots of hip-hop and R&B type songs with original backing MP3 tracks. A pretty large community behind it from what I understand, too. (It's originally a Japanese game, hence the Anime music in that video.)

Keyboardmania, looks pretty cool and is dam close to what I was talking about, but it is missing the frets on fire cool factor (guitar, drums and bass, coops, multiplayer, etc) and is only for keyboards but it seems to be on the right track, if only it had the notes coming at you instead of down the screen, it would be right on.

I searched it in google and it seems to be a japanese playstation game based on a coin operated video game from japan and there is also a piano hero game but couldnt find that download either. there is a wiki page for keyboardmania: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboardmania

"Piano Hero" was Synthesia's old name:

Keyboardmania is floating around the internet, as is the free clone "Doremimania", of which there are some "mega packs". I'm going to try to grab some of them to see if they're any good. Theoretically, there's a patch for Keyboard Mania PC to make it work with any MIDI keyboard attached to the computer.

For those of you interested in having a good, working, in-development replacement for DoremiMania, KeyboardMania, etc, vote for the MP3 Background Track feature here:

A keytar is less original than an actual keyboard peripheral, because all it is is a differently-shaped guitar controller. No considerable changes in the game mechanics would need to be made for a "keytar" track unless it has more or less than 5 gems.

From what I hear I think Rock Band is actually making a keyboard peripheral, and maybe they dropped the keytar idea

Only problem I can see arising here is a possible lack of charted keyboard parts. If we went with the full 25 keys then it's pretty much asking the charter to compose a full arrangement of the song (if accurate charting is what we're talking about). The time it would take to arrange a song by ear is quite a bit longer than you might think...

Plus, of course, chart editors would need a large amount of modification too.

Not if charting by ear or from a ridiculously bad tab.
