MegaLight Version 4 -Discussion Thread-

Postby blazingamer » Mon Apr 11, 2011 5:08 pm

Q: Why are you opening a discussion thread?
A: It feels great to have my theme packaged with FoFiX where I can work on it to fit the capabilities of FoFiX all the time, but I also like input as well of what might make it better. While I do hang in the #FoFiX, I know a lot of you don't and feel making a topic would be a good way to get input from everyone.

Q: Why are you creating a new MegaLight instead of expanding on the old ones?
A: With the push for stability and customizability being the key points of FoFiX 4, I felt I should create a theme that encompasses that. I wanted to create a theme that shows what one can do with the new features opened up to theme makers.

Q: What really makes MegaLight light?
A: MegaLight was originally created to be runnable on everyone's computer but due to the engine that is not possible. Now MegaLight's goal is to create a theme that is complete but the filesize of the theme is small.

Q: Will the old MegaLights still be supported?
A: Yes, though improvements won't be made to them. What the old MegaLights in the git repositories are for is to provide a quick and easy template for converting old themes for 3.x to 4.x in the future.

Q: Where can I get the latest version of MLV4?
A: Whenever you download the FoFiX git repository you get MLV4 as well as ML:RB, ML:GH, and UberLight. Alpha versions will have slightly out-dated versions depending on changes I make in the repository.

Q: How can I tell which notes are HO/PO?
A: HO/POs can be differentiated by the fact that the music note on top is white instead of black.

Q: How can I tell which notes give me charge?
A: Notes the will charge up your star power/overdrive are designated by their gold ring instead of silver.

Q: How do I change the rockmeter to the Minimal or Classic (alpha 1) styles?
A: Both are offered as mods with FoFiX 4.x which you can then enable to replace the standard rockmeter. Minimal HUD is recommended for those who like showing off charts or video backgrounds while the Classic is for those who enjoy the old FoF style interface.

What is wrong? Do not worry, there are mods now in the git that when turned on bring back the other Rockmeter that looked close to the classic FoF one, as well as the stage.

Man, that's a huge change from the alpha release. I'm currently getting FoFiX from the git repo, and yeah, it feels good to be back, I never felt so fun after many months I didn't play FoFiX. Good job Blaz for this theme, it's my new default theme now. And this is what I've been looking for, originality.

P.s. I've been wanting to say this since the first time you released MegaLight V4 in the repo, but the notes looks too flat. Maybe you can make it's look a bit more "3D"? Ah, I don't know how to say this, but the notes are too flat.

Yeah, already a lot of stuff I designed for MLv4 is a year old and I've gotten quite a bit better since then. I plan on modeling the notes in 3d, then taking rendered screenshots of that like I used to back in the day for 2d notes, then also include the 3d notes.

Hope you can do it. By the way, you got the rockmeter renders downwards instead of upwards. And perhaps the fret buttons are not aligned properly? Because the flame effect renders a bit lower on the fret board, other themes don't have this problem, and I think this is why it's hard for me to hit the notes accurately.

EDIT: Well, I don't think that's the case...

Sorry, we may not package those kinds of graphics with the game due to copyright infringement upon distribution.

Why the alternate colour scheme for notes and frets?
Why no beatlines?

Sir, this is what you call originality.

I understand originality, i just think these colours are a poor choice, especially for drums.
And IMO beatlines help for strumming/drumming patterns like polyrythyms, and it's been done before, so it's not really original.

The colours are the same as original FoF, just in a different order. As for the beatlines, I added little markers, they'll be displayed in the next screenshot that I upload.

Don't worry, they were only shape/concept experimenting since I haven't done them in awhile. I think I got the hang of designing them again and made some new ones.
