system specs ? video card etc ? just for troubleshooting purposes... and OS

hmmm.. yes that should be fine... the error looks almost like a source issue... i assume you have the latest version and all... and your nvidia driver is installed properly etc etc. ill try and reproduce the error here if i can... i have close to the same setup you do ... only ive got a slower machine... piii 1 ghz fx5500 sp2

I got the game installed but when i go to play it freezes

I do believe I am using this version.

Displays "Invalid argument" and "<ok>" when trying to play the game or view the tutorial. Very strange. :/

does it mention something about difficulty when it errors ?
mine does that on the new version.. i think there might be a bug there somewhere

No. Absolutely nothing about difficulty. What I mentioned before just appears while still running smoothly. Hitting enter returns me back to the main menu.

A dialog box tells me to look at the log for details of the error upon exiting.
