Don't bother with the SP3 install. I'm running into this EXACT problem. I'm on XP Pro SP3. It's a legit version and it's pretty much a fresh install. Can't figure out what the fxxx is going on with it. XBCD and the Microsoft drivers will not work. The MS drivers will bomb out the XBCD ones don't get picked up manually or automatically for some reason.
---- EDIT ----
Ok... after digging around relentlessly... I found a few links that resolved the issue finally!
Here's what you do:
http://www.fofspain.com/international/a ... 385-2.html
Follow up with the post above... and add that line.
If things work for you at this point, great! If not, like it did not for me, then you'll need to go grab this:
http://matt-land.com/xbcd/
Grab that, extract it and run the batch file. You'll make the same exact line addition into the .inf file. Then when XP Hardware Wiz ask for the driver update, point it to the new folder where the .inf is. Mine's up and working! Hope this helps folks out. -joe

What kind of guitar controller are you using that isn't identifiable by device ID as a controller that's compatible with the Microsoft driver? I haven't had any such problem with the XPlorer or Rock Band guitars.

Well I can' help too much, but I would say that the best way to fix it is to not use Windows! xD
Heck, if anything, get a PC and dual boot Mac/(Vista/XP)
Either way, the best of luck.

Re: XP not finding xbox 360 X-plorer guitar driver
i to had ordered an x-plorer from redoctane. i have 2 newer computers with in the last year here, and one p4ht and none of them recognize the explorer, 2 machines have vista 32bit and the other has xp professional sp2. i don't even go as far as getting the sounds you normally get when plugging in a usb device! no install wizards, nothing! this is starting to get very aggervating
edit:
ok so apparently there is a difference! the one from that has redoctane plastered on the front of it with the black packaging does not work! however the one from activision with slash on the box does! i just purchased the activision one from circuit city, pluged it in and windows recognize's it!
sorry to be the bearer of bad news for the people that bought x-plorers from redoctane.com but they just don't work! find the activision guitars! i bought mine for 19.99 usd

Re: XP not finding xbox 360 X-plorer guitar driver
Don't use the official Microsoft driver...it doesn't like up-and-down strumming at all. XBCD has a fix for that.
I went through the trouble of making a Frets on Fire saved profile complete with Star Power over-sensitivity fix, whammy bar activating Star Power fix and of course, the double-strum fix, zipped it up with the installer and the INF you need to make XBCD recognize the controller, and wrote an idiot-proof guide to getting the guitar all set up (README.txt).
Here's the download:
XBCD 360 (Frets on Fire edition)
Be SURE to read the readme.

Re: XP not finding xbox 360 X-plorer guitar driver
im currently running XP sp3 AND the microsoft drivers and have never had a single problem, not with detection of the controller or with strumming problems, i tested with a GH SG and 2 different Xplorers ( one from GH2 and one from GHWT ) and a Rockband guitar. all detected and played perfect.

Do you play expert difficulty?
Everyone I know who has ever installed the official Microsoft driver had a problem where, when you strum up-and-down very fast, some of the strums won't be registered, which makes rapid-strumming segments virtually impossible to play. Perhaps this was fixed in an update or something, but I'm pretty sure it hasn't.

I don't use Windows personally, so I can't help you with the Windows XBOX drivers. However, working in a computer shop that services windows boxes, I will say this, regardless of whether or not this will fix the problem, you should have SP3.
Windows Update is there for a reason.
Outside of that, good luck. The XBMC (Frets on Fire Edition) looks promising.

Re: XP not finding xbox 360 X-plorer guitar driver

I'm pretty sure you're getting that error because you're not on an administrator account. Make sure you log into the administrator account before you try to install anything. If you're logged into an admin account, it will still tell you that the driver isn't signed, but it will give you the option to continue installation anyway.
It should probably be mentioned that I'm pretty sure the driver that I posted is also not digitally signed.
...XBMC? :P
