The FretsonFire editor is fine for me, most people use the Freetar Editor, and im sure there are loads more you could use out there...

There is also ANVIL STUDIO ( its free - google the site ) thats a real midi editor, so no need to convert a .SNG to a .mid coz it allready saves as .mid. The most advanced you can use is FRUITY LOOPS ( you can get the demo from there site ) Thats also a midi editor ( well its actually a full multi track sequencer that has an amazing midi editor as part of it) so that also saves out as .mid. Its the hardest to learn but will probably get you the best results.
And i just happen to have a tutorial ( see link in my sig ) on making songs with Fruity loops :)
