FRAPS substitute

Postby piegore » Sun Mar 22, 2009 7:41 pm

Hey... I just tried recording a sightread of Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden with fraps and it lagged at certain points causing me to mess up. I have the full version of fraps (got it for free haha) and I was wondering if there were any downloads that could help fraps or any other programs like it that are free (or able to "obtain" for free) that record with just as good quality but with no or almost no lag.
Thanks!

Check out the quality! It's amazing! But you can see where it lags... The video is in HD so don't click on the link if your computer can't support it. I also cut the video into two parts because in one piece, its 357 MB which would take hours to upload and I'm too lazy to wait! Haha.
Part one
Part two

If you can recommend a good program, I will be very grateful. If not, back to recording with a camera! Hah.

(I prefer not to have the logo in the video like GameCam does.)

I used to use camstudio. It's free an open source. You can see my little "tutorial": http://fretsonfire.phonotheque.ca/scree ... #camstudio
Or get the software right there: http://camstudio.org/
To reduce lag don't forget to use smaller game window's resolutions.

What do you mean by using smaller game resolutions?
Like have it record at a lower FPS? because I record at 60 FPS on fraps. Is that WAY too high?

He means screen resolution like setting it to 640X480 or 800X600 to reduce lag.

You say that the FRAPS are murdering your FPS ? Most time ,recording game is heavry work that will take down the FPS because it is writing hard disk.
I like the E.M free game capture. It is easier than FRAPS and it recorded video in lots of popular formats.

To throw one more in here...I use Growler Guncam.

If you're not using FoFiX you're using the wrong version of FoF.

To record "uncompressed" with CamStudio I use one of the ffdshow's codec, similar to Fraps FPS1 codec. Maybe it's usable with ultra vnc screen recorder as well. You can also get CamStudio lossless codecs: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=630599

Try recording with a window size of 800x600 and set fraps to half-size/20-30 fps

You're right! FFDShow let's me specify to leave it uncompressed.

I've personally never had a problem with FRAPS. I run at full resolution and 30 fps with zero lag, and I don't think of my computer as being amazing, but it's decent.

fraps is amazing with fps. it just lags at certain parts which causes me to mess up in an embarrassing way when recording FoF songs
