Hello all,
I’m new to this forum, and new to Frets on fire X. I’ve searched for lot of songs,
and there are lot of good titles in the song database, BUT.
But, few of them can actually be downloaded, as their creators uploaded them on
some random dumb file hosting websites. As far as I can tell, there is approximately
1 song available for 20~30 broken links. I can’t blame people who
take time and effort to make great songs, but I’m really really disappointed when I
find a good title and got a "File not found" or "Bad download link" or "File doesn’t
exist"…
I don’t have a solution, maybe is there a way to host the songs on the same server
which host the forum?
Someone could also host all the song on a personal server, and other people would
mirror this, but I doubt there will be volunteers…
Well, for now I will try to find new songs that have no broken links :/
Have a nice day o/

Re: Dead download links
Hello there!
I agree with you on the amount of broken links. It's huge. The problem is, Mediafire and Megaupload used to be very popular on this site. However, Megaupload got taken down, and Mediafire (and also other hosting sites) got more strict with copyrighted material. That's why most old links are dead.
However, this topic might help you out. I recommend PMing someone if they have a song you want, because some people are already inactive, but get an email when you send a PM.
And as for hosting the songs on the same server as the forum... I'd say this is a good idea, but I think the problem is copyright laws. I think the person hosting the server could get into a LOT of legal trouble if they get caught.

Re: Dead download links
What could also prevent links is not including the guitar.ogg, because I'm pretty sure the only reason they get taken down is because the music is copyrighted. I know scorehero does that so it's not like it wouldn't be possible to do it around here.
Though a lot of my charts are of bands that are not very well known, So unless i keep re-uploading the music there wouldn't really be a way to play them unless they buy the CD off of Itunes themselves.

Re: Dead download links
I personally do have some uploads without the guitar.ogg, but the problem is that I think that many people don't feel like syncing the chart to the audio themselves. That can be pretty annoying if you download a bunch of songs.

Re: Dead download links
Correct. If we hosted any of these files ourselves, this site would have been taken down long ago. I've seen about a dozen attempts at this over the years and they're all gone now.
The charts could be stored in a manageable location though. For the most part, they're not copyright protected (or just no one cares). As mentioned, no one wants to match up the charts with the music. What COULD be done though is to "uniquely identify" the charts and the music. For example, MIDI file #41234 matches up with OGG file #159385. Down the road: "The link for OGG file #159385 is dead. Does anyone have it?" "Apparently I do, here's a re-upload!"

Re: Dead download links
Not really a pipe dream. There was a RB customs tool that read the audio and created a sort of blueprint. It then kept this data so it could sync and match the new audio with the original source. I haven't followed this however so I don't know its current state.
