Suggestions for "Report This thread" reasons

Postby Azzco » Sun Oct 19, 2008 9:36 pm

When reporting threads there's a few reasons to choose from and I thought that the most common causes for a lock is probably suitable.

Right now the list looks like this:
  • The post contains links to illegal or pirated software.
  • The reported post has the only porpuse to advertise for another website or another product.
  • The reported post is off topic.
  • The reported post does not fit into any other category, please use the further information field.

AFAIK the report feature is used to report whole threads as well. If that's not the case skip the first one.
In any case this is a few additions I can think of:
  • The reported post is about a topic allready being discussed in another thread.
Of course the reporter should direct the user to the thread discussing the topic, rather than just yell "Use the search button".
  • The reported post contains strong language
  • The reported post has the sole porpuse of insulting someone.
    flaming
  • The reported post encourages flaming.
    Troll posts

If you have any other good reasons please post them here.

It's not like I dislike sleeping, I really do like it to be honest. It's the whole wake up/go to sleep business I don't like.

How about a "this thread is in the wrong forum" option?

Goodbye everyone. It's been fun. I spent many many hours here on these boards and playing/contributing to FoF. Today I uninstalled my game and deleted all my files. I just don't have the time or interest anymore. I won't be coming back here anymore. I might show up in the IRC from time to time to chat. I regret nothing.

So long, farewell.

I added 3 new report reasons:

  • Inappropriate
The reported post is rude ("flaming", "strong" language) and/or inappropriate.
  • Existing
The reported post as already been discussed and should be locked in favor of another.
  • WrongSection
The reported post is in the wrong section and should be moved accordingly.

[*]The reported post is off topic.
.

I'd say the mods shouldn't be to strict about this. If a whole conversation is started in a topic, sure, report it. But there are also constructive off topic posts :[

I'll tend to agree. We'll try to only warn/enforce this for the more extreme situations.

I was mainly thinking about thread hijacking on that one. ;)

Thread hijacking usually just results in deleted posts and warnings.

Okay another one. Title does not reflect content
And the box under it could be used to suggest a new title for it.

The thing is there could be a large number of reasons to report a post so the list could become quite long. In my opinion, the most popular report reasons are already listed, the "Other, provide description" reason is meant for more particular cases
