Best Drum Songs?

Postby italianstal1ion » Wed Aug 14, 2013 5:55 pm

I've been looking for more songs that are challenging - songs that force you to make new or interesting moves, or have a beat that is kind of complex. There's those songs that push you a further than you were before, and once you master them, you've become a much better player. For me, these are:

Jeff Beck - Scatterbrain (podruvan)
Between the Buried and Me - Swim to the Moon (tadracing)
The Mars Volta - Drunkship of Lanterns (me)
Foals - Hummer (breadache)
The Arusha Accord - Night of the Long Knives (jackdamaster)
Tool - Ticks and Leeches (me)
Venetian Snares - Gentlemen (TheLieInKing)
Circus Maximus - Biosfear (tadracing)
The Mercury Program - Backseat Blackout (breadache)
Rush - La Villa Strangiato (puppetz, me)

There's tons that have improved my skill, and plenty I haven't mentioned, but these songs in particular really taught me to play differently and look closer at my technique. I'd recommend anyone play these songs.

How about you guys? What songs have influenced your playing the most? Or what drum songs are the most fun?

Wintersun. Kai's playing is ridiculously varied, his parts are never boring.

Man playing Gentlemen was and still is such an involving and fun chart for me. That one makes me feel alive when I finish playing it.

I would second Kai's playing. It's fairly rooted in ye olde metal stylings, but he loves to throw little jazz transitions and fills into Wintersuns stuff and it, in my opinion, keeps it sounding fairly fresh. And his work in Rotten Sound is downright punishing.

Steve Shelton from Confessor is also really unique.

And everyone knows this one but I'd also throw up Deaths "Sound of Perseverance" album.
First time I heard Scavenger of Human Sorrow I'm pretty sure my jaw went clanging on the floor.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (the whole song!) is a great endurance training track.
Ingesting Blattaria by Blotted Science was another mind opener for me. (I'm not that good haha)
