The Gaming Review: Sega-CD

Postby ThickAsABrick » Mon Aug 08, 2011 12:39 pm

This will be a different topic probably once a week on certain consoles, accessories, or games, throughout the history of video gaming where you provide any thoughts, opinions, memories or anything that comes to mind about the topic.

Today's discussion is on........................................

THE SEGA-CD

Image

The Sega-CD (known in other countries as the Mega-CD) is an add-on device for the Sega Genesis video game console, designed and produced by Sega and released in Japan, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and North America. The device adds a CD-ROM drive to the Sega Genesis, allowing the user to play CD-based games and providing additional hardware functionality. The Sega-CD can also play audio CDs and CD+G discs. A main focus of the Sega-CD was to showcase Full-Motion Video Games (FMV), which is live action video of actors in the game. Titles for the FMV games on the Sega-CD were Night Trap, Double Switch, Sewer Shark, Mad Dog McCree, Ground Zero Texas, Corpse Killer, Prize Fighter, Scottie Pippen's Slam City etc.

Here' a Commercial showcasing the Sega-CD:

Here is the AVGN review of the Sega-CD:

What's YOUR opinions,thoughts,memories on the Sega-CD?

cool livejournal brah

Why would you choose this piece of crap for the first one? Anyway...

The SegaCD wasn't that good. The thing about the early CD consoles was that the technology just wasn't quite there, in both drive speed and video compression. There were some good games, but even the classics, like Night Trap, just aren't that good. Also, all the games were mostly just a variation on a theme: take a horror movie/action movie/thriller movie/space movie, fill it with struggling actors and add Quick Time Events/a crosshair every couple of seconds. The adventure games were terrible, especially considering the PC was doing much more by then, and abandoning the genre, not to mention the games weren't exactly Carmen Sandiego.

Sonic CD is the best Sonic game, though. Best soundtrack of the series, even beats Sonic 3 (which was made by friggin' Michael Jackson) coupled with different timezones that allowed for nice replayability. Make My Video is probably one of the funniest games ever, too. Lethal Enforcers 2 was good if you had the pistol. Night Trap sucks.

All and all, no real killer titles apart from Sonic and a lot of shovelware and repeated ideas. It was something that allowed for FMV's but didn't really offer any other improvements beside memory, graphics stayed the same. Should have never been made. The Saturn was terrible, too.

Do Dreamcast next.

EDIT: dammit aander

The OP is more of an ad than anything, this could've easily been mistaken as a spambot in the 90s. If you're going to review something, how about you do it right and compare pros and cons while giving your own opinion on it.

Nice Wikipedia. Also I never had any Sega console and I don't really care for them. Maybe the Dreamcast but meh.

And what an impression you've made...

The Sega CD sucks. The one I have is just sitting around. Apart from Sonic CD, don't think I've heard of any other noticeable titles.

I still play mine from time to time. The game Sewer Shark that came with it is pretty cool.
Never really owned a lot of games for it, but Sonic CD was easily the best.

It is a review because YOU guys are reviewing it. The new topic is presented, and then reviewed by the forum.
