The Red in the Sky is Ours is just death metal that's a bit more melodic than most DM, Slaughter of the Soul is where they really started playing melodic death metal. Or on one of the albums between those two, I never cared enough to listen to them.

That's what melodic death metal is lol

Re: Is Kalmah the best melodic death metal band?
Just a slightly related topic, not focused at this conversation directly...
Why do people always get so up in arms about the genre of a band sometimes? Seems like a waste of energy in most cases.
Yes, I'm aware that this is a discussion, not an argument... yet.

why not? lol
no one is being forced to participate in such a discussion. It's just good friendly debate (unless you're 14 and take offense somehow to something being said)

You're using melodic as a prefix to death metal and I'm talking about the genre melodic death metal, there's a difference. Much like Dream Theater is progressive metal (genre) and Atheist is progressive death metal (progressive as a prefix). This thread is clearly about the genre as the first band mentioned was Kalmah.

i'll probably get booed out of this thread, but i'd like to argue a case for children of bodom... idk how you guys would feel about the vocals, but instrumentally i'd say they're top notch
also, skyfire is pretty good too =p

Bodom's first three albums are fantastic, Hatebreeder is one of my favorite albums.

hmm, they have good stuff on all of their albums, but i'd probably agree that as a whole, their earlier stuff was better... although that's not to say they slouch on their new songs, even the new album is pretty good IMO...

I'm just a sucker for their neo-classical stuff, Follow the Reaper is probably my least favorite out of their first three. That said I dislike their new direction. It's far from awful but for me it just isn't better than their original sound and style.

Re: Is Kalmah the best melodic death metal band?
i actually love follow the reaper... that would be my favorite or tied... and nobody ever likes the newer stuff from a band as a general rule... i'm open to the idea that different =/= worse, so that's why i can't really say that it's significantly better or worse.. it's just different

Re: Is Kalmah the best melodic death metal band?
Hmm theres alot of good melodeath metal bands:
Children of Bodom - Not the first to do it, but they sure is hell do it well. Plus Alexi Laiho is one of the sickest guitarist i've ever heard
Norther - Just got into these guys a while back, definately not best, but they are good
At The Gates - One of the first Melodeath bands, they have a nice thrashy element to there Melodeath music that makes them one of the heavier melodeath bands
In Flames - FTW! I love In Flames so much, their A Sense Of Purpose album is very melodic and heavy, but there first two albums are the best by far
Kalmah is probably top... oh.... say... 10 maybe. You'd be surprised at how many melodeath bands there are.
