What Monster Magnet and Sleep did was basically write stories that make little sense. MM was influenced by delta blues imagery and science fiction. Sleep was influenced by science fiction and pot.

As for music, basically, you're probably gonna want to tune down a step or two, although standard also works fine. Basically, make intricate, groovy, fast pentatonic riffs with lots of chords, then, instead of playing them fast, slow them way down. It comes out sounding either really boring, or really great stoner material. Either that or copy and paste Sabbath riffs. Worked for Sleep.

Okay, just because you told me to, I'm going to stop defining between different forms of metal, and be lost as to the difference between Carcass and Motley Crue.

Who is **** stupid enough to not be able to tell the difference between too different bands? Hell, you could give EVERY band it's own sub-genre but then what the hell is the point of having band names?

It's because many bands have similar dynamics and sound, ect. Every metal band doesn't sound drastically different. Having subgenres helps people find new bands that may have otherwise overlooked.
