The first things you install on a new computer?
You've just bought a new computer, or formatted your old one. You have a fresh OS on there (Win/Mac/Linux, don't care). Now, what do you install first?
The first few things that go on my windows computer are:
Firefox
Windows Live Messenger (and the Messenger Plus! Live extension)
WinRAR
Antivirus / Firewall (I haven't yet settled on specifics)
Notepad++
K-Lite Codec Pack
IrfanView (unless it's XP. The Picture & Fax viewer is good enough for me)
...I'm sure I've missed some, but they're probably the basics for me. Post what you install first.

Re: The first things you install on a new computer?
Assuming it's a general, personal use computer, assembled to be a parallel backup or for another person,
Drivers
Anti-virus
Anti-spyware
Mozilla Firefox
Microsoft Word
Other information gatherers, such as a RAR extractor or a torrent downloader
Anything important I forgot while installing the aforementioned.
If it's made to replace the current computer, I just clone the hard drive.

Re: The first things you install on a new computer?
sudo apt-get upgrade
That's the most important, whether it is Linux or Windows. Grab your updates.
I usually do damn near full installs on Linux, so I never really need to load up anything new. Almost all the programs I use are already there.
On windows, I usually grab the following:
Aforementioned Windows Updates
Firefox
Adobe
Flash
VLC
AVG
Open Office
Notepad++
Putty
7-Zip
I don't do windows installs often, unless I'm at work, but this is my personal list. Not the 'work list'.
