Depends on what level of skill.

I can impress people who dont play, but i cant impress people who know how a guitar works <_<

I own 2 guitars and been messing around for about 3 years

I can't, but I wanna learn.

Those of you who can play, did you just teach yourself, or did you take lessons?

Also, any suggestions for ways to start (guitars to learn on, etc -- preferably cheap)? Even before I first played Guitar Hero last year I'd been interested in learning to play, but this summer I took up golf so I only had time for one hobby, heh. Now I'm back at school and whenever I come home I have nothing to do.

Well, I took lessons for a while from two different teachers, and they were both horrible teachers. I would recommend reading some stuff online by Jamie Andreas (cyberfret.com I think) She tells you what to look for in a teacher...now I'm going self taught...just bought the John Petrucci DVD and book, a Joe Satriani book, a Guitar Grimoire book, and will soon buy the fretboard logic series.

Played for 6 years, been in a couple of bands and hopefully will get a new one together over the coming months. To give an idea of playing ability then I can do a pretty good rendition of Children of Bodom (the song by the band of the same name), Master of Puppets, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, and god knows what else.

Started by having lessons for a year, then I worked in the shop owned by my teacher. I was no longer having lessons then, however it did mean I got to play loads of different gear and teach myself from books etc. Then Ive just taught myself using tabs for Powertab Editor or Guitar Pro.

One of the most important things if you are starting out is to get your alternate picking going from the start. I didnt learn this until id been playing for 4 years and as such have found it very difficult (it does however mean im stupidly fast at just down picking, lol)

Yeah, alternate picking is quite important. And Guitar Pro has helped me alot, it's also inspiring sometimes, knowing that I can change the tempo of a song and learn it slowly.

Took a few years of lessons about 4 years ago to get started, been self taught since then.

I have an accoustic Dean and a Fender Strat. Mostly like just jamming some blues.

The same case here... I don't know why I'm losing my time.

At least, with FoF I can start training my fingers for that... lol.
