I'm looking at both games, and they are both selling for the same price. Battlefield 2 with all 3 expansions vs battlefield 2142 with it's one expansion. Both are $30, but I don't know which one to go with. Battlefield 2 seems to still be more popular, but I don't want to get an outdated game if everyone is getting 2142 these days. Also, BF2 has a lot more mods out, which may just be because it's older, but it doesn't look like there are many in-the-making for 2142. In closing, if there is a better tactical multiplayer game out there than either of these, please point it out.

I have both, I would definitely say 2142 but honestly neither are fun without playing with other people you know

C. Battlefield 1942

Otherwise, Battlefield 2. Who cares about the expansions. The mods keep this game fun and fresh for a long time.

2142 is weak IMHO.

From what I've heard, nobody really plays that mod, although it looks really awesome.

The only mod I've found to be consistently populated for BF2 is Project Reality which really isn't for everyone

In terms of the vanilla game, 2142 is much more balanced and fun. The biggest improvement over BF2 is infantry combat is actually bearable

A few questions before I make a decision:

which one has a better infantry combat system? I don't exactly want to be forced to be in a vehicle to have any fun. I think you've already answered this one actually.

which one requires more tactics and teamplay?

which one has better vehicles? air and land

Which has better graphics? Probably 2142, but do the mods for bf2 make up for the base game. Sometimes the mods look a lot better graphically wise

How easy is it for me to find a full/nearly full server in each of the games?

Are the hitboxes a problem? When I played the bf2 demo, I couldn't seem to hit anyone.

What kind of game modes do they have?

Which one has more maps and which one has better maps?

If anyone can answer just a few of these quesitons, that would be great.

If you come from playing CS or something, both games will throw you off. When you shoot someone in BF2/2142, you don't really get any sort of confirmation that you hit them and it feels sometimes like your shots are worthless. It's really hard to explain. 2142 is way better about this though, you can usually feel confident that your shots are hitting people.

It's not really a hitbox problem though. I think it has to do with the netcode and the way the weapons work. No weapon is hitscan, every bullet has a velocity. It's noticeable when you snipe and you have to lead people who are running

As for which game has more tactics, I dunno. Both games have their moments where tactics will really win the game I guess. 2142's titan mode probably encourages teamwork than other modes.

BF2 has way more vehicles, if you like volume. BF2's jets are notorious for being probably the most overpowered absurd vehicles in any video game, but they have a learning curve. The Bf2 tanks are incredibly powerful and don't have many weaknesses.
2142 condenses the jets and battle choppers into a jetcopter thing that's useful, but not overpowered. 2142 also replaces the vulcan AA tank with an awesome walker that's as good anti ground as anti air. The tanks in 2142 are made more for firing from a distance, and can be killed from one rocket to the back which keeps them at range. The vehicles in 2142 are alot more balanced, but theres a few less of them.

Both have pretty equal graphics I guess. Many 2142 maps have sort of a smaller color pallet than bf2 maps, and there's usually more grey. Both games look good though.

As for finding servers, as far as I know both games are still populated. It might be hard to find any server that plays anything other than Karkland for BF2 or Gibralter for 2142 because those are the most infantry centered maps with the most intense combat

BF2 the only really played game mode is conquest, where you capture and hold points on the map.
In 2142, there's Conquest, Push, and Titan. Conquest and push are basically the same except in Push you have to capture the points in order. In Titan you have to capture silos (points basically) around the map that fire missiles at these big ship that you can spawn on called Titans. Once the titans take enough damage from the missiles, their shields go down and the opposing team can board the titan and try to destroy it from the inside. It can be pretty intense, as your team sometimes has to defend your titan, capture silos, and attack the enemy titan all at the same time.
Not every 2142 map has titan mode though

As for maps, BF2 has alot of maps but there are a bunch that noone likes. I think 2142 has less maps but they are all enjoyable.

One of 2142's biggest features is it's rank and unlock system. There are a ton of unlocks. In BF2 there were a bunch of gun unlocks, but no equipment or upgrades. It takes a ton of playing to get to the top rank in 2142

Alright, sweet. Thanks for the help. The only thing that's stopping me from getting 2142 right now is the lack of mods. BF2 has some pretty good looking ones including project reality and forgotten hope 2. Do you think the mods for BF2 would put it past 2142? Oh, and do any of the mods fix that overpowered aircraft thing in BF2. When I played the demo, it was pretty annoying too.

I don't know, I haven't played much of Forgotten Hope 2. I imagine they balanced it somehow.

Project Reality is a really weird mod. The entire game's pace is incredibly slow. Matches can last like 6 hours. You have to get engineer kits from your commander before you can get a tank, and you need a crew of at least 2 people before you actually use it. There's usually alot of teamwork and voice comm stuff though, which is something you don't usually see on public servers.

This was the kind of thing I was looking for in any of the battlefield games. If there is a better game than the BF ones that has this kind of stuff, please point it out to me. Otherwise, you've helped me find exactly what I was looking for. Oh, and if I do get BF2, are the expansions worth it? BF2 is $10, but bf2 with all 3 expansions is $30.

Best is choice D.

COD4. Lol, completely reguardless of anything said so far, that multiplayer online for that is so massively fun and addicting its rediculous. No need to worry about mods and there is such a wide variety of video options that most computers can run it. It b**** slaps any of the battlefield games (no offense to them, 2142 was really fun for the month or two that I played it) and probably has a lot more people playing online due to it being more recent and being game of the year last year.
Its very close in gameplay too so its the same general concept you're looking for. (And best of all, has one of the best single player campaigns I've played in years. It's the first game since FF7 that i've had to sit back for a moment and just think, "holy sh**." lol)

EDIT: Sorry for this getting a bit off-topic and unrelated to what you were asking. Its just a better buy in my mind. Lol

I honestly don't know how you could play CoD4 for more than like a couple of months without getting bored from it's shallowness. This thread isn't about games like CoD4
