Recently I have been practicing a bit, and on one particular song (on an easier difficulty) I thought I hit pretty much everything perfectly, or close to it.

Out of curiosity, I looked it up on the World Charts. I noticed, that though I was in the list, my score was of course outranked by a number of people. That's fine it itself, but the top score was a at about 64K, while mine was at about 54K.

So this is what I don't understand... how in the world could I get an additional 10K on that song, since I hit every note already??? Are these scores legit? I know that a while back people were hacking their scores, so I don't know if this is still happening.

Otherwise, maybe someone can explain to me how I can improve my scores. Is there some magical technique that I don't know about??

Maybe your not holding chords till the end? stopping too soon... it's a possibility, or maybe they have edited the song? more notes into the song would get them higher scores i'd guess...

There may have been a few notes I didn't hold till the end, but I don't think it was nearly enough to make a 10K difference in the score. And there isn't a different version of the song that I am aware of. But I suppose I better double check.

If you havn't noticed, when you have a song and the last note is a chord or a long note, at the end of that note you get a big boost of score if you have 4x , that could make quite a difference...

Or what i was saying about other people editing the song for themselves, maybe fixing notes, or adding in notes that the song maker may have missed, that would probably change the score...

Indeed I did notice the end of song "bonus." But I do see what you mean about the song editing. That would be unfortunate, if people were editing the song themselves. Would be nice if there was a check for that somehow, like a version stamp that would be changed with every edit.

On some songs, you can see in the charts that there is a difference of only a few hundred points between the the top ten or so players. That makes sense. The huge differences make less sense though ;-).

Well, if you miss in the middle, it ruins your streak.
I know for a fact that:
149-miss-150
will get ALOT less points than:
299-miss

That usually causes a big difference.

Multiple reasons.

1)They may have edited the song.
2)They may have a different version of the song.
3)They may be writing their own scores.
4)You may not be holding the chords for as long as possible.
5)If you strum the "air", or any area without notes, it won't lower your accuracy but it will reset your multiplier.

Now #4 is much more crucial than it appears. I let Jurgen play Defy the Machine and he let go of the chords earlier than I would. Jurgen recognizes the immediate possible window to hit a note, so that's the reason for letting go so early. It made a 40k difference by the end of the song.

Okay, so the song I'm talking about is the Underwater Lab Theme from WADF. I'd link to the charts page, but the server seems to be down now, so that doesn't help either.

To my knowledge, there is only one version of the song, so that's not likely (but possible). Certainly 1 - 3 are plausible factors. For the record, I got a 100%, so no I did not miss any notes. Thus, variances in the multiplier affecting the song are not possible.

Perhaps the fact that I have been not holding some notes as long as I could be holding them is the key difference here. The song is not that hard, which is why I was using it as a ranking test. But if I recall, many notes are placed rather closely, though many are hopos. So many notes I don't see how you can hold them till they are "finished" because a new note comes in right at the end which as to be pressed.

If anybody wants to try this song and see how well they can do, and then compare the score on the charts, maybe this would be clearer. But I thank you for your explanations so far, and I will have to try again and see how well I can do.

I played the song on Expert, and encountered a big song "no-no". In the last 20 seconds, there's a bunch of notes with tails. Mostly chords. In one particular part, a note with a tail starts before another ends, making it look similar to this:

---------------G>>>>>>>>>>
---R>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------

Jurgen couldn't play it. I had to edit many parts of the song in that last 20 seconds to make it playable. That's probably what the top scorers did.

Ah, okay. I don't suppose you can send me the edited version of that? Or upload it somewhere? Thanks for checking that out. Much appreciated.

Thank you very much. Not sure if I'm up for Expert just yet, but it'll be good to have this song without those messed up notes in there.
