I have heard rumours that FoF was invented before GH. Maybe it was released later, BUT hell, maybe the original developer (Sami Kyöstilä) started to code it before GH was invented!
My mate was there when the first version of FoF was released in Assembly demo party 2006 and I have heard about this from him. The rumour goes that the developers of GH bought the patent of the idea from the developers of FoF!!!
So at the moment, my vote goes for "GH is a FoF clone"

Guitar Hero was released in late 2005, before Fof was shown in 2006. If the fof dev team were paid, none of us would know about frets on fire, because development of it would have stopped the moment that red octane or whoever purchased the "idea" to it. If any patents were bought by the guitar hero dev team from the fof team, there would be some lawsuits going on. When money changes hands over a matter like that, there are rules involved. I'm sure there would be some stipulation in the contract to prevent frets on fire from being released to the public, based on the fact that they were paid, and that fof could potentially take sales from guitar hero. If fof was started on before guitar hero, I'm sure the author would be super pissed that someone is making money from his idea, his free game, and that a lawsuit would be involved.

common sense seems to debunk this rumor.

my vote is for "It's a clone".
Simply because the gameplay is close to identical. Sure, it looks a bit different (other backgrounds, menus and so on), but that's about it.
The nice thing is the community and the custom songs, which make FoF the clear winner for me (especially if you have a guitar controller working at your PC).

I think the same
4 or 3 days ago I played for the first time GHII at my friend's place and got addicted to it, I don't have PS2 so I googled "guitar hero pc" and found a message of someone that was telling about FoF and gave a link to it, I downloaded it and it made me feel almost the same as playing GH!
So, yes, it's a GH-Clone

What? A sixth fret would make the game less GH'ish, wouldn't it? Or maybe even three player support.

This is zie last warning. If you don't stop, I will send Jurgen to castrate your guitar while you'll be sleeping.

wouldn't it be hilarious if GH3 turned out to have an open fret?

And I wouldn't bring it back in, as most people would start crying that he wants FoF more GHish.

GH3 for PC is gonna be awesome, since it removes those guys with the "I want it to be like GH!!11" attitude.
