This is a simple tutorial how you can create a "Artist Collection".

A "Artist Collection" is a separate collection and a copy of all your songs sorted by artistnames and tracknames.

The finish is it to get this structure:

All what you need is the FoF - Song Manager 3.01 or above.

1. Select your song directory:

This should be look like this:

2. Click on main menu - Tracklist Functions - Create "Artist Collection"

3. Create a new folder and select it:

4. At the first time it's the same if you want to delete the content of this directory or not, because it's a new empty folder. maybe you want to add some music to your artist collection later then choose 'no', when you want to create a new artist collection choose 'yes':

5. The program now copy all your music into this artist collection sorted by artistnames and tracknames automaticly. Be sure that you offer enough discspace (e.g. if your music library (song directory) is 1 gb, so it copy 1 gb and you need totally 2 gb). Also it needs a while!

6. After copying reload your song directory and see this:

Now you have an exact sorted copy of all your music. If you want to play of a special band, just select the letter then the band then the song.
Important: It deletes no tracks, it removes no tracks, only it copy the music. But be aware, DON'T CHOOSE YOUR ORIGINAL SONG DIRECTORY AS YOUR NEW ARTIST COLLECTION and when the query is showing press "yes, delete the content", sure this will delete your music!!!

Information:
The function "Create Artist Collection" works over the table in the FoF - Song Manager. If you search after words like "red", it founds e.g. "Red Hot Chilli Peppers". Well, when you create a artist collection with only 3 entries in table with "Red Hot Chilli Peppers" it just copy this 3 tracks into the new or exist artist collection.

well whenever I download a song, I just put it into a certain folder named by the band, for example, if it's avenged sevenfold, it goes in said folder, if I download a song by a band I havn't downloaded by, I just make one, it keeps everything simple, I'll do without this sorry. great tutorial for those who do want this however.
Want a video done of you're songs? or just want to see a song videoed anyway? then come to my thread!

video requests thread =)

It seems to me that this would be so much more practical if, instead of copying the songs into the artist collection directory, it just placed links to them there. My collection of songs is nearing 10GB, so you can imagine I don't exactly care to double that just for a new organizational scheme. :D

Aside from that though, very cool idea.

I don't believe that FoF can read (folder) links. Maybe a good question for MFH :;):

I know it can on Linux (I've got links to all of my songs in one directory, and I have no trouble playing songs from it). On Linux (and probably any *nix system, though I'm not sure), any program which you point to a link never even "knows" it's dealing with a link; as far as the program's concerned, it's handling the real file (or directory).

I just came across this tutorial...

Yes, shortcuts won't work, but Windows actually has built-in support for a few different types of "hard" links like those contrast mentioned. However, it's not very intuitive to create and manage them. This third-party shell extension makes using them much easier: http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html

You need to be aware of the differences between the types of links. See the url above for more info. For our purposes, I would suggest using junctions. The problem with using hardlink clones instead is that any files subsequently added (e.g., you add label/album pics) would need to be linked separately by hand. On the other hand, a junction links the entire directory and its contents. There are other differences, however. Remember that deleting or renaming a hard link only affects the one instance, whereas deleting or renaming within a junction affects both instances.

FoFiX's new menu system with built-in sorting and jump-to-letter makes things much easier than it used to be. However, I want a quickplay list that is game-agnostic, while also preserving the game's career mode. This requires at least two versions of my collections--but in fact, I went rather overboard: I have three quickplay lists, one organized into alphabet subsets (1-D, E-L, M-R, S-Z), one separated into difficulty tiers, and another list that only includes songs that have lyrics.

That's four different versions (well, three-and-a-half, I guess) of a very large collection. No way would I want to use up all that hard drive space.

Good luck.
