All any of the APNG programs do is stitch images together. I pine for a program like the old Jasc Animation Shop 3, where you can see the timeline, edit frames, view real-time previews, etc... APNGs would be good, but the effect of APNGs should be able to be emulated. ...that would allow you to string together image frames (like animated stages currently do)... I think apngs are better than making different images as you say. Apng is free, like png, and it wouldn't be too hard to impleme...

There's a problem with the kick notes on the drums, they hang off the side and they go off the fretboard. Both ends go off about 1cm off the fretboard. How do I fix this?
